Chapters Transcript Video Meet the Chief: Hear from Joseph McGinn Jr., M.D., chief of cardiac surgery at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. my name is Dr joseph Mcginn Jr. I'm a cardiac surgeon. I always wanted to be a rock star. But the problem is I don't play an instrument and I can't sing. So that wasn't gonna work for me being an airline pilot. That would be one of my top choices or a ship captain. Actually pretty similar jobs that you have a lot of responsibility. It's exciting and you really make a difference. The thing that attracted me to Miami cardiac and vascular institute is the word innovation. Basically my careers have been wrapped around innovation. Many years ago I developed a technique which some people call the Mcginn technique. So basically what it is is a triple bypass or quadruple bypass instead of being done through the traditional stern artemis or zipper or crack the chest over. We do it in between the ribs on the left side. We're one of the few places in the United States that does it on a routine basis. The major advantages of that is that you don't break any bones or cutting muscles. The patients are able to get back to full activity literally within about eight or 10 days of surgery, patients are no longer only interested in surviving, they want to know how they're gonna be when they survive. They want a quality of life. They come looking for me because I give them an opportunity to get back to work in seven days or get back to golfing in seven days or get back to just being normal in seven days. They're so grateful. Uh And that's what makes me tick. I was born and raised in Brooklyn in Flatbush no less. I caught the yankee bug from my dad. My dad was a diehard yankee fan and of course I followed suit with the Giants and nicks and all my new york teams. I'm, I'm having trouble shedding them. I am clinging onto them here in Miami, My first wife passed away and I have four kids with her. They were all very young. Uh I met a wonderful woman, we got married and we raised those four kids up and we have one kid of her own all, I really wanted them to be happy. My oldest son is joseph Mcginn the third, so he's going to be a cardiac surgeon to. It is so exciting Coming to Miami, one of the big attractions was the water. I started off with inflatable rubber boat when I was 10 years old. We used to go in the bay and roll around and I have had a boat ever since. Any day without a boat is a bad day. I, I can even go to the boat and sit at the dock with the boat tied up to the dock and just sit there and relax and enjoy it. All of our lives are crazy busy. We all have so many things going on and if you can get something to distract you from all those crazy things that are going on in life. Uh you've got a perfect solution to anxiety Created by
