The practice of medicine is often referred to as “the healing arts.” At Miami Cancer Institute, however, it’s not just the physicians doing the healing but also a group of seven professional artists. These talented artists-in-residence – musicians and singers as well as visual and literary artists – have been at the cancer center every day since April, engaging with patients and helping them harness the healing power of the arts to better cope with their illness and treatment.
Mountain mm And the Miami Cancer Institute has developed an arts and medicine program to promote the well being and clinical outcome of our patients with cancer. This program is comprised of seven outstanding professional artists, including musicians, singers, literary artists and visual artists. In addition, we also have clinical therapeutic artists who are board certified in art therapy and music therapy. I think the Miami Cancer Institute is a really beautiful space. But it was designed with a lot of intention around centering the patients. I love that as part of the arts and residents program that we have an opportunity to add to that with our music with our arts and continue to create a positive impact. Yeah, I can't recall of this one time I had a patient. It was her cycle one day. One first time. Never been to the cancer institute. It was her first time ever being diagnosed with cancer. You can tell that she was very anxious. I came into her room. Um I asked her a few questions and I noticed that tears started flowing and I was able to get the violinist that day and he was able to play for her a couple of songs and you can tell that the tears were wiped, they were dry. There were no tears anymore. And she said that it was one of the best experiences that she's had ever since she was diagnosed with cancer. Yeah, yeah. For the patients here, it's a great program because you forget you forget what you're going through and you can focus on something positive. It's like listening to music or spending time with family. It's a moment where you can forget everything that you're going through. Can you just how little slice of happiness? I would say if you can make it to where you can keep this program going because it has been fulfilling to me, and I'm sure that many other patients will will get something out of it. Yeah.
