Miami Cancer Institute and Miami Cancer Institute – Plantation –Earn APEx Reaccreditation and New Accreditation in Radiopharmaceutical Therapy

Reaccredited and Advancing: A Commitment to Excellence in Radiation Oncology

Miami Cancer Institute and its satellite location, Miami Cancer Institute – Plantation , have once again been recognized for their leadership in delivering high-quality, innovative cancer care. Both locations have earned reaccreditation through the APEx — Accreditation Program for Excellence — from the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) for an additional four-year term. In addition, they have received new accreditation in radiopharmaceutical therapy, underscoring the growing role of precision medicine and targeted therapies in cancer care.

Miami Cancer Institute is proud to be the first and only proton therapy center in Florida to earn APEx accreditation. With the addition of Miami Cancer Institute – Plantation gaining this significant recognition as well, it places our Institutes among just 11 other radiation oncology facilities in the state to achieve this distinction.

APEx is the gold standard for safety and quality in radiation oncology. This recognition reflects both sites’ adherence to rigorous benchmarks in evidence-based clinical practices, strong multidisciplinary collaboration, and ongoing performance improvement.

“Our reaccreditation and new radiopharmaceutical therapy accreditation underscore the collective expertise and dedication of our clinical, technical, and operational teams,” said Alonso N. Gutierrez, Ph.D., MBA, FAAPM, vice president of medical physics and dosimetry and associate professor at Miami Cancer Institute. “For referring physicians, this achievement reinforces that their patients will receive the safest, most advanced, and most effective cancer treatments available.”

Why This Matters for Referring Physicians

Radiation oncology has rapidly evolved, with radiopharmaceutical therapies offering a powerful new option in treating certain cancers. These therapies deliver targeted radiation at the cellular level, reducing exposure to surrounding tissues while improving outcomes.

With this new accreditation, referring physicians can be confident that their patients have access to advanced radiopharmaceutical care delivered by a team that meets the highest national standards. This includes the integration of nuclear medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and medical physics to provide safe and effective treatment pathways.

Collaborative Excellence in Action

Achieving dual accreditation is no small feat as it represents months of cross-disciplinary coordination and performance review across multiple sites and specialties. This milestone is a direct reflection of the Baptist Health Cancer Care team’s shared commitment to safety, innovation, and continuous improvement.

This achievement also highlights the role of technology, training, and teamwork in delivering on Baptist Health’s mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care close to home.
