Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute has named board-certified neurologist Nestor Galvez-Jimenez, M.D., director of the autonomic neurology program. He specializes in movement disorders and autonomic failure. He treats such conditions as Parkinson’s disease, dystonic syndromes, tremor, myoclonus, Tourette syndrome, chorea, Huntington’s disease, gait and balance issues, cerebellar ataxias and dysautonomia as well as other autonomic problems such as long COVID neurological complications, orthostatic intolerance and sweat disorders.

Dr. Galvez is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine in electrodiagnostic medicine and the 
American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in neurology and neuromuscular medicine. He also holds subspecialty certifications from the United Council of Neurological Specialties in autonomic disorders and headache medicine.

Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. Galvez was a neurologist and director of the Movement Disorders Program and Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Florida and the inaugural holder of the Pauline Braathen Distinguished Chair in Neurology, conferred in 2012.

Dr. Galvez is committed to training and mentoring the next generation of clinicians. He serves as a professor of neurology at both Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine as well as clinical professor of biomedical sciences at Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Science. 

Dr. Galvez earned a Doctor of Medicine degree at Universidad San Carlos Facultad de Ciencias Medicas in Guatemala City as well as at the State University of New York in Albany, N.Y. He earned a master’s degree in neuroscience and behavioral biology at Universidad Pablo de Olavide in Seville Spain and a master’s degree in health services administration at Barry University in Miami. He also earned a Master of Jurisprudence degree in health law, policy and management and risk management and compliance at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Dr. Galvez’s clinical training includes an internal medicine residency at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens, where he served as chief resident. He completed a neurology residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland. He also completed two fellowships: a movement disorders clinical and research fellowship at the University of Toronto, Toronto General Hospital and an electrodiagnostic medicine fellowship at Cleveland Clinic Florida.

In addition to his clinical and teaching expertise, Dr. Galvez has conducted extensive research in his specialty, published his findings in peer-reviewed medical journals and presented his work at national and international symposiums. He also serves as an editorial reviewer for numerous high-impact scientific journals and has published and edited five books: The Scientific Basis for the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease; Uncommon Causes of Movement Disorders; Parkinson's Disease: Current and Future Therapeutics and Clinical Trials; Non-Motor Parkinson's Disease; and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. 

Dr. Galvez is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Neurological Association and the American Heart Association and Stroke. He is also a member and committee member of several other professional organizations and serves on many institutional committees. 

When it comes to patient care, Dr. Galvez offers care that is compassionate but straightforward. “I always put the needs of my patients first,” he said.
