Baptist Health Breaks Ground on New Home of Kenneth C Griffin Neuroscience Institute
Baptist Health has broken ground on the new home of Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute, marking a major investment in the future of brain and spine care, neuroscience research and medical education in South Florida.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Baptist Health also announced an additional $25 million gift from Kenneth C. Griffin, bringing his total philanthropic support for neuroscience at Baptist Health to $75 million.
In recognition of this transformational investment, Miami Neuroscience Institute is now known as Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute, part of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care.
The new 197,000-square-foot facility will be located on the Baptist Health Baptist Hospital main campus in Miami and is expected to open in early 2029. It will expand access to highly specialized care while bringing clinical services, rehabilitation, research and education together in one setting.
“Today marks a significant milestone for Baptist Health, Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute and the patients we serve, as we celebrate the groundbreaking of a world-class neuroscience facility and Ken Griffin’s extraordinary $75 million total gift to the future of neuroscience,” said Bo Boulenger, president and CEO of Baptist Health.
“Ken’s generosity will help us accelerate research and innovation, educate the next generation of neuroscience leaders, advance prevention and expand access to highly specialized brain and spine care,” Mr. Boulenger added. “We are deeply grateful for his confidence in Baptist Health and his belief in what we can accomplish together.”

Expanding Access to Advanced Brain and Spine Care
The new facility is being designed to meet the growing need for expert care for complex neurological conditions.
It will enable Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute to add 16 subspecialty providers and expand its number of examination rooms. Patients will also have access to a range of services under one roof, including outpatient physical, occupational and speech therapy, rehabilitation and neuroinfusion services.
The goal is a more connected experience for patients and families — one that brings more of the specialists, services and support they may need closer together.
The facility will also expand opportunities for clinical trials and support the use of advanced technologies to diagnose and treat complex neurological conditions.
A New Home for Patient Care, Research and Discovery
A defining feature of the new facility will be the close integration of clinical care and research.
Physicians and researchers will work side by side, creating an environment where discoveries can more quickly inform patient care. This collaborative model is intended to accelerate progress across neuroscience and its many subspecialties, including research into neurodegenerative disorders.
“Our vision is to establish a premier destination for brain and spine care in the South — one that keeps pace with our growth as a top-ranked neuroscience institute, meets the needs of a growing patient population and advances research in neuroscience and neurodegenerative disorders,” said Michael McDermott, M.D., system chief executive of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care; chief medical executive and Irma and Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Clinical Neuroscience at Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute; and chair of the Department of Neurosciences at Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
“With this new facility and the Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute Transformational Impact Fund, we will have even greater opportunities to advance clinical care, research, innovation, education and prevention,” Dr. McDermott said. “We are tremendously grateful to Ken Griffin for helping make this vision possible.”

A $75 Million Gift to Advance Neuroscience Research, Treatment and Care
Griffin’s additional $25 million gift will establish the Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute Transformational Impact Fund, supporting key priorities across neuroscience, including research, innovation, education and prevention.
The new gift builds on Griffin’s $50 million contribution in 2024. Together, the gifts represent $75 million in support for advancing neuroscience research, treatment and care at Baptist Health.
Griffin’s combined gift to Baptist Health Foundation is among his largest supporting healthcare in Florida to date and reflects his longstanding philanthropic priority of helping people live longer, healthier lives.
“Today we celebrate what makes Baptist truly special — the hope it creates for all of us. The hope that this extraordinary team at Baptist gives to patients and families living with neurological disease. And the hope that, in the years to come, this team's research will continue to find ways to diminish — and ultimately end — the suffering inflicted by neurological disease,” said Kenneth C. Griffin, Founder & CEO of Citadel and Founder of Griffin Catalyst. “I want to thank the doctors, nurses, researchers, and staff of Baptist Health who give their time, talent, and heart to this remarkable program,” he added.

Training Tomorrow’s Neuroscience Leaders
The new facility will include Baptist Health’s first academic lecture theater, creating additional opportunities for education, professional development and collaboration.
Through Baptist Health’s academic partnership with Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, the Institute provides clinical education and training for medical students and residents. Institute physicians also serve on the College’s faculty.
By bringing patient care, research and education closer together, the new home of Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute will support the development of future physicians, researchers and healthcare leaders.
Nationally Recognized Expertise for Complex Conditions
Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute brings together nationally recognized expertise in neurology and neurosurgery. Its multidisciplinary team of subspecialized physicians provides compassionate, expert care for patients with complex neurological conditions, including dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. With the groundbreaking now underway, Baptist Health is building more than a new facility. It is creating a destination where patients, specialists, researchers, educators and future healthcare leaders can work more closely together — helping move neuroscience forward and create new possibilities for people facing some of medicine’s most complex conditions.
